It is just for screen display.
Indesign color page. With the document open click the View button in the toolbar then choose Page Thumbnails. Select a thumbnail of a page you want to change. Select Document in the toolbar.

Then change the font colors to suit. The blend space only affects the flattening preview of spreads with transparency it doesnt actually change the mode of the objects. OK I see you didnt want to override - but its only on each individual page and its reversible.

Color labels let you apply a highlight to the bottom of pages in the pages panel. There you can simply select the square and change the color. Make sure that the image is saved as a grayscale or bitmap image and that its saved in PSD TIFF BMP or JPG format.
